1. It's about the drive, not the destination, unless it's Disneyland.
Our family of 4 recently took a road trip to Southern California. Actually we're a family of 5, but the dog had to stay home. Because of everything we typically pack into a week, we got a late start, and we were not going to arrive until about 2:00 in the morning.
The drive turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of the trip. We discussed who would win in a fight, Iron Man or Darth Vader. We discussed world history. We jammed out to Miranda Lambert. And when precious backseat real estate starts to shrink, the option is to play winner take all rock-paper-scissors. The prospect of losing usually diffuses any conflict.
2. If it ain't perfect, then it's perfect.
We stayed in 3 hotels in 5 days, and what's the one we still talk about? The one that was a complete bust. Not only were the mattresses as like sleeping on the roof of our car, the cleaning crew must've spilled all the Glade air fresheners in our room because my eyes started watering when we opened the door. We would've slept with the door open, but the portable radiator heater wasn't up to the task. Not to mention the rotating colors of LED lights outside the door. Apparently all the hipster motels have gotten rid of anything edible in the snack bar in favor of potatoe MRE's. I wasn't sure if this was the new cuisine, or if were supposed to feel prepared in case of tsunami.
All that to say, I've never seen the kids laugh so hard talking about a hotel room. That's a memory they'll have forever.

The picture above isn't from this latest trip. It's a couple years old from another trip to California's central coast. We were looking for a place to surf, and play on the beach. We ended up finding the coolest little beach town that we ended up returning to on this trip for dinner on our way home. There is also the coolest fruit stand with outstanding pies and coffee. If you're visiting the central coast you have to check out Avila. Sometimes it pays to say "Where does that go?"
